Woodhams Stone Collection – building resilience

Find your spark!

I supported this small, volunteer-run collection, based in Malton, North Yorkshire, to undertake a range of activities aimed at increasing their resilience. With a very limited number of trustees and active volunteers and no regular publicly open venue, the Woodhams Stone Collection has to work hard to sustain itself financially.

The Association for Independent Museums funded the project which included:

  • Reviewing the existing Forward Plan and creating a new plan and action plan
  • Developing ideas for income generation and understanding the collection’s cash flow
  • Identifying the work required to apply for Accredited status
  • Supporting the change from Trust to CIO
  • Undertaking a skills audit of exiting trustees and developing a new trustee handbook and role descriptions

I also ran a Trustee recruitment drive. This included planning and delivering an open evening to attract new Trustees (and volunteers), and advertising through local and museum sector media.

The Woodhams Stone Collection are now pursuing their plans for a permanent ‘home’ where they will be able to offer talks and tours of the collection, and open it for researchers.
